Max Skousen, Director at the Aloe Vera Research Institute, in his book,
Aloe Vera Handbook, describes the amazing Aloe Vera Plant. "Aloe Vera is also known
by many grateful laymen as the Medicine Plant, Burn Plant, First Aid Plant or Miracle
Plant. Aristotle persuaded Alexander the Great to conquer the island of Socroto, off
the east coast of Africa, for the purpose of obtaining sufficient amounts of Aloe as a
wound healing agent for his soldiers. Other ancient records describe its application for
skin care, protection against the sun, wind, fire and cold, healing of wounds, relieving
insect stings and bites, scratches, scalds, bruises, cuts, abrasions, acne, poison ivy,
blemishes, allergic conditions, irritations due to faulty diet, ulcerated skin lesions and
eczema. The Bible, in John 19:39, describes a mixture, containing Aloe, used in the
anointing of Jesus.
A booklet entitled Aloe Vera Letters, True Healing Experiences,
Royal Publications, Inc. explains: "Centuries ago, man discovered the remarkable
healing properties of the Aloe Vera plant. Since that time, people throughout the world
have passed down their personal uses and experiences with this amazing plant. To this day,
Aloe Vera's green medicine continues to soothe and heal various
conditions as it did when patent medicines were non-existent."
Early producers of Aloe Vera used pasteurization to stabilize the liquid.
It was soon discovered that heat destroyed many, if not all, of the indigenous enzymes
which many researchers felt were important to Aloe Vera's effectiveness. Subsequently,
researchers isolated an active ingredient, mucopolysaccharides, and felt by concentrating
the ingredient, efficacy would increase. Unfortunately, concentrating this ingredient
removed the larger molecular sizes of mucopolysaccharides and some researchers felt,
reduced its effectiveness.
Recently, researchers have discovered a unique characteristic of Aloe
Vera. When mixed with herbs, it is capable of extracting the essence of the herbs. This
finding has led to a new level of Aloe Vera efficacy - Herbal Aloe Vera. The unique
cold-processing of whole-leaf Aloe Vera protects the enzymes, provides the full spectrum
of mucopolysaccharide and combined with herbs, improves flavor and efficacy as a beverage. |
